The We Campaign Addresses Global Warming

Alliance For Climate Protection Sponsors Activist Group

Former Vice President Al Gore's group seeks to end U.S. dependence on fossil fuels within ten years.

Practically everyone has heard about global warming. But is anyone doing anything about it? The We Campaign, an effort by the Alliance for Climate Protection, seeks to engage 10 million citizens in a radical attempt to change their energy usage. Here are the facts on this important group.

Founded in 2006 by Former Vice President Al Gore, the Alliance for Climate Protection is focused on solving the climate crisis. According to the Alliance, scientists believe that there is only a short time left to ensure that the next generation will inherit a healthy planet. The We Campaign’s goal is to get Americans to change their lifestyles as needed to bring about a “broad culture shift.” The Campaign also wants to create enough public opinion on the issue so that politicians will take action.

Campaign Partnerships

To meet these goals, the We Campaign has joined in partnership with the Blue Green Alliance, comprised of the Sierra Club and the United Steelworkers. Other partners include The Climate Project, the Colorado Wildlife Federation, the Earth Day Network , the Girl Scouts USA and Audubon. At present, the movement claims 1,486,372 people as active in this campaign.

As part of this effort, the United Steelworkers (USW), the Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Green for All, and the Blue Green Alliance have launched a national campaign, Green Jobs for America. The campaign will run throughout the fall. It will focus on “a commitment to clean, renewable energy, to make the U.S. more energy-independent.” Other goals include ending dependence on fossil fuels and creating new, green jobs.

The We Campaign website contains a quote showing that “investment in a clean and efficient economy” would “lead to over 3 million new green-collar jobs, stimulate $1.4 trillion in GCP, and add billions in personal income and retail sales.” It goes on to say that within ten years, this economy would pay for itself.

Furthermore, the We Campaign says that worldwide, investment in renewable energy grew 25% in 2006, and that clean-energy industries such as biofuels, wind, and solar photovoltaics each passed $20 billion in revenue.

A Few Questions

On the personal side of things, the We Campaign has held Town Hall meetings to produce leaders in the movement. In addition, the Campaign asks some basic questions: “What are giving your energy to – that is, what is most important to you in your own life? How are you dealing with this issue?” And, “What does the prospect of global warming and environmental collapse mean to you personally? What can you do to conserve the energy you are using?”

Gore and his activists believe that every little change we make can help. For more information, contact the We Campaign at WeCanSolveIt.org.
